Jeff Smith’s ‘Bone’ Is Your Next Netflix Fan Dream Come True

In its quest for endless content, Netflix has fulfilled so many fan dreams by adapting cool but otherwise niche properties into prestige streaming shows. At this point, it feels like they’re just plucking names out of a hat. A live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender show? Sure! Cowboy Bebop remake starring John Cho? Why not! The Russo Brothers produce… Magic: The Gathering? That’ll drive up subscriptions.

And now another lucky brand has just been called up to the Netflix big leagues. Bone is your next Netflix adaptation.

Bone is an award-winning indie comic book written and drawn by Jeff Smith. For nearly fifteen years Smith intermittently published stories about the cartoony Bone Brothers and their comedic yet dark fantasy adventures. It was something fresher and weirder to read in the 1990s if you were getting tired of increasingly garish superhero comics from Marvel and DC.

For the longest time, all I really knew about Bone was that it was a cool alt-comic. Almost like something out of Europe. Telltale also made a Bone adventure game before they really broke big. But I couldn’t tell you anything about the characters or the plot. And I imagine that describes a lot of people, if they even know at all that Bone is a thing. Even the most popular comic books only have so much mainstream reach.

So a Bone show on Netflix makes perfect sense as something with already proven quality but that’s also essentially a new franchise for the majority of the audience. It’s like HBO’s Watchmen show but arguably even more obscure.

Details on the Bone animated series are scarce. Smith put out a statement saying how grateful he is to work with a team that really understands the source material. Considering Nickelodeon apparently wanted to make a Bone adaptation full of pop songs, we think Smith is being genuine.

In the meantime, here’s everything else coming to Netflix for the rest of this month.
