‘Cuphead’ Cartoon Is Coming to Netflix

Considering how brutally difficult the shooter-platformer gameplay is, you’d think most people wouldn’t be able to stand more than five minutes of Cuphead. And yet players kept coming back for more and more punishment because each death just gave them another chance to admire the game’s utterly exquisite art and animation.

Drawing from classic cartoons of the 1930s (even brushing up against their more problematic elements) Cuphead made players feel like they were inside a jazzy interactive work of art from the earliest days of Disney. And if you want to enjoy that art without wanting to smash your controller at the same time, soon you can with the new Cuphead streaming show coming to Netflix.

As reported by our sister site IGN, The Cuphead Show! (also starring Mugman) is a new throwback cartoon coming to the streaming TV service thanks to Netflix, the developers at Studio MDHR, and King Features. While Cuphead’s original creators are involved, Netflix itself is handling the animation, which will feature more digital assistance than the animation in Cuphead the video game. But the hand-drawn aesthetic should remain intact. Producers have previously worked on cartoons like Rocko’s Modern Life, SpongeBob SquarePants, and Mickey Mouse.

The show will follow the adventures of the two beverage brothers in their home of Inkwell Isle and will hopefully include the colorful boss characters as well. The Devil? The show will be much more family friendly compared to Netflix’s other video game adaptation Castlevania but adults should appreciate the humor as well.

There’s no release date for The Cuphead Show on Netflix yet. Good animation takes time. Meanwhile, play Cuphead the game now on Nintendo Switch and soon on Tesla cars for some reason. And look forward for to the Delicious Last Course level pack coming next year.
