These Are the Games You Should Check Out in July 2019

July is almost always one of the driest gaming months. Most developers tend to avoid the first full month of summer like the plague. Thankfully, players will find plenty of notable titles to keep them indoors this July.

There are heavy hitters like Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 and Wolfenstein: Youngblood for those seeking AAA titles. Those looking for massive time-sinks can gorge on games like Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers, Fire Emblem: Three House, and Dragon Quest Builders 2. There’s a little bit of everything for all types of preferences.

Wolfenstein: Youngblood

Platform: PC, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One
Release date: July 26

Bethesda’s recent Wolfenstein games offer some of the best FPS action on the market. As such, it’s great to see a spinoff title drop so soon after the last main game, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus. Wolfenstein: Youngblood focuses on the daughters of William “B.J.” Blazkowicz, who are on a mission to find their father. Like the last two Wolfenstein games, this title takes place in an alternate Earth where the Nazis won World War II. The fun part is this game is set in the 1980’s of that reality. That means you can expect familiar 80’s tropes filtered through this unique setting. As a child of the 80’s and of alternate reality stories, I expect to have a great time with Wolfenstein: Youngblood.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order

Platform: Nintendo Switch
Release date: July 19

With the recent success of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, now is the perfect time for a new Marvel Ultimate Alliance title. Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order is a Nintendo Switch exclusive that borrows heavily from the films. It has many of the characters folks have come to love. Yet, it doesn’t adhere to any movie or comic plot. You can even enjoy it if it’s your first Ultimate Alliance game. We’ve gone an entire generation without a new Ultimate Alliance. It’s awesome to finally have a new installment.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses

Platform: Nintendo Switch
Release date: July 26

Fire Emblem titles have always released on handhelds but that is about to change with Fire Emblem: Three Houses. This Nintendo Switch exclusive is the first entry in the series users can play on an HDTV. Since it is a Switch title, players can also take it on the go. Like previous installments, Fire Emblem: Three Houses features grid-based tactical RPG gameplay and a deep story. With three different factions to play as, players are looking at hundreds of hours of entertainment. I’ve never played a Fire Emblem game so I may give Three Houses a shot.

Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers

Platform: Mac, PC, PS4
Release date: July 02

Final Fantasy XIV’s success is remarkable considering its disastrous launch. Square-Enix used a Phoenix Down on the title six years ago and it has remained one of the most popular MMOs out there. Shadowbringers is the game’s third expansion. It includes new jobs, player races, Beast Tribes and Primals, an increased level cap, and more. This expansion isn’t trying to remake the wheel. It is doing more of what fans have come to expect. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it, right?

The Sims 4: Island Living

Platform: PS4, Xbox One
Release date: July 16

The Sims 4: Island Living is the perfect summertime game. In this latest expansion, players can take a virtual vacation to an island paradise they have full control over. The expansion features activities like swimming, local delicacies, and hanging out with mermaids. Since it is an island, players will also have to contend with monsoons and volcanoes. Currently available on PC, console players can dive in later this month.

Dragon Quest Builders 2

Platform: PS4, Switch
Release date: July 12

The original Dragon Quest Builders accomplished the impossible by combining Minecraft-like building mechanics with a focused narrative. The sequel, appropriately called Dragon Quest Builders 2, does more of the same. Players get to build villages brick by brick and attract NPCs to live in them. They also explore a massive world full of dangerous monsters. This entry introduces co-op gameplay, allowing friends to build and kick monster butt together. If you’re looking for a more polished Minecraft experience with a healthy dose of RPG gameplay, Dragon Quest Builders 2 is just what you’re looking for.

Kill la Kill – If

Platform: PS4, Switch
Release date: July 26

I like anime as much as anyone, but I tend to avoid anime-based titles. The fun of the original is almost always lost when turned into a game. With that said, I am keeping an eye on Kill la Kill – If for the same reason I watched Dragon Ball FighterZ: Arc System Works. The studio develops exceptional fighting games with equally impressive graphics. Kill la Kill – If looks like the anime in video game form. Interestingly, this title is less of a traditional fighter than it is a brawler. I’m actually not a fan of brawlers, but this is Arc System Works so I’m willing to give it a try.

Blazing Chrome

Platform: PC
Release date: July 11

Blazing Chrome is a love letter to Contra. It features the same side-scrolling 2D action that made Konami’s series a classic. In fact, it looks more like Contra than the recently revealed Contra: Rogue Corps. Blazing Chrome releases just a month after Konami dropped the Contra Anniversary Collection. Because of that, some may find its existence unnecessary. Why play a Contra-like game when one can play the real deal? I understand that sentiment, but I’d counter by saying Blazing Chrome is a new experience. Contra III is amazing, but you’ve already played it a million times. I know I’ll check out Blazing Chrome to see how well it captures the old Contra magic and to check out what new elements it introduces.

Beyond: Two Souls

Platform: PC (Epic Games Store)
Release date: July 22

Former PlayStation 3 exclusive, Beyond: Two Souls, makes its way to PC this month. Like Heavy Rain before it, the game takes advantage of PC hardware and delivers improved visuals. Also like Heavy Rain, it is a fairly faithful port. Don’t expect much in the way of new features. Though I personally didn’t find Beyond: Two Souls as good as Heavy Rain or Detroit: Beyond Human, it had an interesting enough premise that kept my attention. I’m not particularly interested in revisiting this title, but it’s cool that others can experience it on PC for the first time. Also, it has Willem Dafoe, which is a big selling point as far as I’m concerned.
