Geek Pick: DJI Osmo Action Is an Impressive Camera Debut

DJI is one of the best manufacturers of drones, or at least the relatively good kind of drones. We’re not talking about the drones the American military uses to turn bombing other countries into an abstract game. We’re talking about the drones consumers buy to fly around for fun and record sick aerial footage. So with that background in exciting dynamic outdoor photography, it makes sense why DJI’s first standalone action camera, the DJI Osmo Action, is such an impressive debut.

An action camera, if you don’t know, is a conveniently portable camera meant to take all sorts of punishment while you record yourself doing extreme things at extreme places. The DJI Osmo Action definitely fits the bill. It’s 1.7 by 2.6 by 1.4 inches and weighs just 4.4 ounces. It’s waterproof up to 36 feet deep. The rugged body keeps the camera working even after perilous drops and there’s a mounting cage for extra protection.

The specs of the camera itself are also worth all that protection. You can record stabilized 4K footage at 60FPS or up the framerate to 240FPS at 1080p for stylish smooth slow-mo shots. Swap between different lens filters, like a polarizer or underwater color balance, to make your image even more perfect. And navigate the menus with color displays, rare for this product category.

As cool as this first attempt from DJI is though, it’s not quite enough to overtake the Hero7 from the kings of action cameras at GoPro. The Osmo Action’s battery life and image stabilization aren’t as good. Stabilization doesn’t work at all with HDR. However, at $350, it is $50 cheaper.
