Look, I’m a casual gamer at best so far be it from me to present my opinions as expertise, but for my money the Nintendo 64 is the best game system of all time. So much of the fabric of modern gaming, from Mario Kart to Smash Bros to Ocarina of Time, originated with that system. To this day it’s the old-school console I find myself revisiting the most.
Apparently the folks at Nike are pretty big fans too, because they just announced a dope new Air Max 97 colorway inspired by the console. The Air Max 97 N64 is coming your way soon and it’s easily one of my most anticipated Nike drops of the year.

The colorway is built from a grey base to match the original system controllers. From there blue, green, and red piping nod to the buttons while the signature Air Max air pods in the sole are a bright yellow, completing the controller color set. There are three dots lining the pull tabs on the tongues as a nod to the three-pronged input jack for the system’s controllers as well as large POWER and RESET buttons that any former owner of the system is sure to recognize.

The heels feature Air Max insignias that draw inspiration from the classic Nintendo logo. It’s all drawn together on the insole, which features a dope new Nike logo in the style of a classic ESRB rating complete with a Nike swoosh and text reading “DESIGNED IN 1997.”

Nike’s already been in the gaming world for a while with their legendary PlayStation collaborations, including the crazy rare PlayStation Air Force One (and its subsequent slightly more affordable and easy to find rereleases and redesigns) as well as basketball superstar Paul George’s signature sneaker including a few PlayStation-influenced colorways. Seeing them branch out into a shoe that pays homage to one of the best systems of all time is crazy cool and immediately puts this Air Max 97 on many geeky sneakerheads’ most anticipated of the year lists.
