Watch: Firefighters Rescue Great Horned Owl Trapped in Fishing Line in Colorado

Wildlife officials enlisted firefighters to rescue a great horned owl entangled in abandoned fishing line in Colorado Thursday.

In a video posted by Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) on Twitter, firefighters from West Metro Fire Rescue and a wildlife official can be seen using a fire truck’s cherry picker to reach the snared owl dangling from the fishing line in a tree at Harriman Lake Park in Jefferson County.

The owl was hanging helplessly until firefighters were able to reach it and clip the lines.

Wildlife officials took the owl, which was suffering soft tissue injuries, to the Birds of Prey Foundation in Broomfield, Colorado for rehabilitation.

The owl was treated with anti-inflammatories and will rest for a couple weeks before being taken to a flight cage for evaluation, the CPW said on Twitter.

Officials took the opportunity to remind the public about the dangers excess fishing lines pose to wildlife.

“Anglers need to be diligent with picking up any excess fishing line, CPW said on Twitter. “In this particular case the fishing line was up in a tree.”

The Great Horned Owl is named for its large, conspicuous ear tufts, which resemble horns perched atop its head, according to the Owl Research Institute. An apex predatory of the sky, the Great Horned Own has long, sharp talons and strong feet that allow them to grip their prey with up to 28 pounds of of force. Their sharp, hooked beaks are also lethal to prey and can be used to rip flesh apart.
