For its latest side hustle, Amazon is selling its cashierless technology to other retailers.
A new website launched on Monday invites companies to leverage Amazon’s Just Walk Out service.
The tech titan has already inked “several” deals with unnamed customers, according to Reuters.
Late last year, Amazon reportedly entered talks to bring Go automation to OTG’s CIBO Express stores as airports, Cineworld’s Regal cinemas, and maybe even baseball stadium concession stands.
The idea is to have “hundreds” of stores working by the end of 2020.
Amazon Go stores are ideal for hungry, time-pressed shoppers: Simply scan your phone to enter, shop as usual, then walk out without ever touching a wallet or pin pad.
Relying on computer vision, sensor fusion, and deep learning, the company’s “Just Walk Out” technology automatically detects when a product is removed from or returned to shelves, and keeps track of them in a virtual cart.
Upon departure, your Amazon account is charged and a digital receipt is sent.
The firm has opened 16 branded outposts since January 2018.
“This has pretty broad applicability across store sizes, across industries,” Dilip Kumar, Amazon’s vice president of physical retail and technology, told Reuters. “It fundamentally tackles a problem of how do you get convenience in physical locations, especially when people are hard-pressed for time.”
Unlike Go stores, though, shoppers using the branded tech at other locations must insert their credit card to enter a gated turnstile (featuring the Just Walk Out logo).
Amazon will install ceiling cameras and shelf weight sensors and staff a 24-7 support line, Reuters said.
