Florida authorities arrested a driver after he was found with a live baby alligator and drugs during a traffic stop on July 4.
Hardee County deputies stopped Anthony Richardson in the vicinity of State Road 64 and Pioneer Park in Zolfo Springs, Florida, on Thursday, ABC Action News reported. In addition to discovering illegal drugs on Richardson, officials spotted the alligator, which had its mouth taped shut, in a bag stashed inside his car.
Before deputies searched the vehicle, Richardson said that he had the alligator in the front seat. Richardson also told deputies that he didn’t possess an alligator hunting/trapping license, but he received the alligator from a friend. Deputies said he had planned to release the creature into a nearby river.
Deputies at the scene contacted the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FFWCC) and safely released the reptile into the Peace River after discussing the incident with an FFWCC officer.
According to deputies, Richardson was booked into the Hardee County Jail for multiple drug charges and illegally capturing or possessing an alligator.
This isn’t the first time a Florida driver was found with a live alligator in their vehicle: In May, a woman pulled a live, 12-foot alligator from her yoga pants during a routine traffic stop in Florida. The woman, who was initially stopped for running a nearby stop sign, surrendered the gator to police following the incident.
