What to Expect at SDCC 2019

Technically a show about comic books, the San Diego Comic-Con has been a celebration of all things nerdy in pop culture for years now. Walk through the show floor and sit in on panels about blockbuster movies, beloved TV shows, new video games, and, yes, sometimes a comic book.

This year’s SDCC kicks off in just a few weeks on Thursday July 18. And between now and then there’s still time for companies to announce what kind of presence (or absence) they’ll have at the show. For example, we already know that Warner Bros. isn’t bringing its upcoming slate of DC movies to Hall H. But we’re still expecting Marvel Studios to shed some light on plans for Phase 4, Disney+, and beyond.

However, even now we already know a lot about what to expect from SDCC 2019. No one can realistically see everything on every day. But being aware of everything happening will at least give you some options if you get turned away or a line is too long. So if you’re heading to San Diego, you can start putting together your schedule now.

Wednesday July 17

While this preview night is lighter compared to the full show, you’ll still be able to catch a sneak peak at It: Chapter Two as well as some DC screenings for Batwoman, Harley Quinn, Teen Titans Go, Prodigal Son, and Pennyworth. Or you can just go to some cool parties to start off your Comic-Con right.

Thursday July 18

Thursday is chock full of great TV panels. You’ve got Van Helsing, The Order, Evil, Nancy Drew, Undone, Teen Titans Go, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, His Dark Materials, Undone, and Agents of Shield for the first time on the main stage.

Beyond those, Marvel is holding a panel on its upcoming video games like bootleg Avengers and Ultimate Alliance 3. Robert Kirkman is hosting a Q&A following the final issue of the hugely influential Walking Dead comic book. Nickelodeon is holding a 20th anniversary birthday party for SpongeBob SquarePants also teasing the new movie. Speaking of 20th anniversary celebrations, Batman Beyond is getting one as well. And for world premieres you can check out the new Shazam documentary as well as the Five Nights At Freddy’s-esque horror reinvention of The Banana Splits.

Friday July 19

This will be a great day to yell at creators for killing the things you love. Not only are the main creative forces behind Avengers: Endgame holding their own panels (directors Joe and Anthony Russo as well as writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely) but the Game of Thrones panel is also on this day. Messy.

For something more lighthearted, check out panels for DuckTales, She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, Veronica Mars, DC Super Hero Girls, and The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. More mature panels focus on Preacher, Archer, Rooster Teeth, The Boys, Pennyworth, The Terror: Infamy, Carnival Row, Legacies, The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead, and The Witcher on Netflix. Check out the world premiere of Batman Hush as well as Marvel panels centering around Spider-Man comics, 80 years of Marvel animation, and the upcoming Marvel Comics #1000.

Saturday July 20

Although there’s no panel for DC movies, check out panels for DC shows Arrow, Supergirl, The Flash, Batwoman, Black Lightning, and whatever is going on with the DC Universe streaming service. Other panels include The Expanse, Star Trek, Westworld, Snowpiercer, The Man in the High Castle, NOS4A2, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, Project Blue Book, and What We Do in the Shadows. Marvel Comics also has more panels: one about X-Men, one about Women of Marvel, and a talk with Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski.

And not to get you too hyped, but this is when you can expect to see whatever Marvel Studios is cooking up as well.

Sunday July 21

Following a 50th anniversary party, watch the world premiere of long-awaited sequel Scooby-Doo! Return to Zombie Island. Also check out the world premiere for Teen Titans Go vs. Teen Titans and try not to get pissed. And rounding out the panels are Riverdale, Mayans, Supernatural, and how to make comics the Marvel way.
