LinkedIn is experimenting with Snapchat-style Stories to help turn water-cooler moments into professional networking opportunities.
Currently under internal analysis, the feature will roll out to members “in the coming months.”
“We’ve learned so much already about the unique possibilities of Stories in a professional context,” Pete Davies, head of content products at LinkedIn, wrote in a blog announcement.
The short sequences, he explained, are ideal for sharing key moments from work events or managerial tips and tricks.
“And the way Stories opens up new messaging threads makes it easier for someone to say, ‘By the way, I noticed you know Linda. Could you introduce me?'” Davies added.
LinkedIn has grown from stodgy job-seeking website to online social network through functions like newsletters, live video, trending news, and Facebook-esque “reactions”—introduced in April.
Aside from the classic thumbs-up icon, the platform includes clapping hands, heart, light bulb, and thinking-face emoji to convey different emotions or activities.
After ripping off the Like button, it’s no surprise LinkedIn wants to duplicate the success of Snapchat Stories—also successfully replicated by Facebook and Instagram.
“Last year, we started asking ourselves what Stories might look like in a professional context,” Davies wrote. “They spread for good reason: they offer a lightweight, fun way to share an update without it having to be perfect or attached to your profile forever.”
Add to that an entire generation of young professionals growing up with Stories as a way of communicating, and Stories look like a pretty appealing option.
“They’re more comfortable starting conversations with a full-screen ephemeral format than posting updates and prefer sharing content that lives as a moment in time rather than as an item in a feed,” according to Davies.
