NASA is tapping university students to help ensure its crewed missions go smoothly.

The 2021 Moon to Mars eXploration Systems and Habitation (M2M X-Hab) Academic Innovation Challenge invites the next generation of space explorers to submit design ideas for future missions.

This collaboration provides real-world, hands-on design, research, and development opportunities for university students interested in aerospace careers.

It also helps strengthen NASA’s efforts to foster innovation.

The M2M X-Hab 2021 Academic Innovation Challenge will offer multiple awards of $15,000 to $50,000 to university projects that provide solutions for advancing technology and overcoming barriers—specifically when it comes to habitation, vehicular, and foundational systems.

Teams should also consider how to assist robotic missions and NASA’s lunar command module Gateway.

Proposals are due by April 24, 2020, and will be reviewed by technical experts; award announcements are scheduled for May 26.

Funded projects must be completed for evaluation in May 2021. Universities can form collaborations to perform as a single distributed team.

“NASA is leading a sustainable return to the Moon with commercial and international partners to expand human presence in space and bring back new knowledge and opportunities,” according to an agency announcement. “The key components of the exploration campaign that will send astronauts to the Moon and beyond sustainably are being developed.”

Last year, NASA, in partnership with the National Space Grant Foundation, awarded nearly $334,000 to 10 university projects.
