These Are the Games You Should Check Out in March 2020

Hey, look, there are actually big games worth playing this month! January and February were dry when it came to game releases. As such, it’s great to have titles we can get excited about.

The best part is that March has something for everyone. Want to rip demons in half? Doom Eternal will satisfy your needs. Looking for more of a laid back experience? Animal Crossing: New Horizons is waiting. From Half-Life: Alyx to Bleeding Edge, the month has no shortage of bangers. I hope your wallets can keep up.

Doom Eternal

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, PS4
Release date: March 20

2016’s Doom is one of this generation’s most over-the-top FPS games. Its sequel, Doom Eternal, is taking things to the next level (of hell!). The game will have more demons and more weapons to slay them with. Traversal gets an upgrade thanks to the “Meat Hook,” which acts as a grappling hook. Aside from the gory campaign, players can also go up against others in multiplayer. For more on Doom Eternal, check out Jordan Minor’s hands-on preview.

You can pre-order Doom Eternal from Amazon.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Platforms: Nintendo Switch
Release date: March 20

Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the biggest Nintendo Switch exclusive of the month. It’s also the most baffling to me. I suppose I can see the appeal of a “life-sim” title where you create your own cute character that interacts with other cute characters. That’s great and all, but it’s not something that’s up my alley. I do appreciate the passion I’ve seen from the Animal Crossing community on Twitter, though. I hope this entry lives up to their expectations.

You can pre-order Animal Crossing: New Horizons from Amazon.

Half-Life: Alyx

Platforms: Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, Valve Index
Release date: March 20

After years of hearing fans’ pleas, Valve is giving the masses a new Half-Life game. It just isn’t what people were expecting. Half-Life: Alyx is a VR-only title where players take on the role of Alyx Vance as she and her father fight aliens who’ve enslaved Earth. Alyx is not a glorified tech demo like some VR titles. It is a full experience — comparable to the length of Half-Life 2. It’ll be interesting to see how audiences respond to this entry and if it will push sales of VR units.

You can pre-order Half-Life: Alyx from Steam.

MLB The Show 20

Platforms: PlayStation 4
Release date: March 17

It’s almost baseball season which means it’s time for a new MLB The Show. I don’t have much to say about this one other than it’s the only baseball video game in town. As such, it’s pretty much your only choice if you’re a fan of the sport. One interesting note is that this will be the last MLB The Show exclusive to PlayStation. Expect it to be on multiple platforms starting in 2021.

You can pre-order MLB The Show 20 from the PlayStation Store.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps

Platforms: PC, Xbox One
Release date: March 11

It’s been a long time coming, but Ori and the Will of the Wisps is finally seeing release. Though there are many (perhaps too many) Metroidvania-like platformers on the market, Ori stands out because of its gorgeous graphics and challenging gameplay. Ori and the Blind Forest is one of this generation’s most overlooked gems. With luck, Will of the Wisps brings in a larger audience. The series is certainly deserving of greater recognition. Check out my hands-on preview to learn more.

You can pre-order Ori and the Will of the Wisps from Amazon.

Nioh 2

Platforms: PlayStation 4
Release date: March 13

With no new Bloodborne or Dark Souls games in sight, Nioh 2 is the go-to title for those who love their games extra punishing. As before, players will visit a mythological Japanese-inspired world filled with all manner of nasty demons and rogues. Sharp wits and quick reflexes are the only way to survive the harrowing dangers before one’s path. Thankfully, you’re able to summon avatars (based on other players) to fight alongside you. Even then, don’t expect a walk in the park. Nioh 2 will make many gamers cry.

You can pre-order Nioh 2 from Amazon.

Bleeding Edge

Platforms: PC, Xbox One
Release date: March 24

It’s still weird to see Ninja Theory releasing a multiplayer brawler. After all, the company is best-known for producing cinematic, story-driven games like Senua’s Sacrifice. Still, based on the reception to the closed beta, it seems the studio is on the right track with Bleeding Edge. As is usual for the company, the game features colorful graphics that pop off the screen. Though I’m not a big multiplayer gamer, I’m a huge fan of Ninja Theory. That alone will get me to at least give Bleeding Edge a fair shot.

You can pre-order Bleeding Edge from the Microsoft Store.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX

Platforms: Nintendo Switch
Release date: March 6

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX is a remake of the Nintendo DS’ Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team and Red Rescue Team titles. While this is still effectively the same game (or games) as before, it features a new watercolor-like art style that gives it a distinct look. This isn’t a standard Pokémon game but it still features turn-based battles and a whimsical world to explore. If you missed out on the originals, this one is worth your time.

You can pre-order Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Rescue Team DX from Amazon.

Persona 5 Royal

Platforms: PlayStation 4
Release date: March 31

Persona 5 is one of the best JRPGs of the generation (and of the past ten years) so it’s fitting that it would get an enhanced version in the form of Persona 5 Royal. This update features a new dungeon, new playable character, and new story segments. There will also be a new semester, which should give players a chance to boost their social links. I love Persona 5 so I’m ready to dive back into its world.

You can pre-order Persona 5 Royal from Amazon.
