We complain about Facebook (and its subsidiaries) like it’s our job. So why not get paid for it?
The social media giant this week introduced Viewpoints, a market research app that rewards people for participating in surveys, tasks, and research.
“We believe the best way to make products better is to get insights directly from people who use them,” product manager Erez Naveh wrote in an announcement.
Collected data will be considered for improvements to Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, Portal, and Oculus.
Interested users can download the Facebook Viewpoints app to set up an account and watch for program invitations.
The platform requires personal data like your name, email address, country of residence, date of birth, and gender—”to qualify you for individual programs,” according to Naveh.
Before diving in, read the fine print about what information will be collected and how it will be used, as well as how many points you’ll receive upon completion.
Reach 1,000 points to get a $5 reward, which is sent directly to a linked PayPal account.
Currently available only to folks in the US who are 18 years or older, Viewpoints makes it debut with a well-being survey.
“We want to better understand how the use of social media like Facebook can impact people’s well-being,” Naveh said. “Information from this survey will help us build better products that aim to limit the negative impacts of social media and enhance the benefits.”
Facebook has a dubious history of keeping digital data safe. But the company promised that it “won’t sell” info to third parties or publicly share activity without permission.
Users can end participation and delete their Facebook Viewpoints account at any time.
British market research and data analytics firm YouGov offers a similar quid-pro-quo payment system for participants in the UK.
