Take Cooking Lessons With Airbnb Hosts Around the World

It’s the most wonderful time of year—for cooking.

Between Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s, there are plenty of opportunities to impress family and friends with your culinary skills.

And, thanks to Airbnb’s new Cooking Experiences, folks can unlock the tasty traditions of people all over the world.

Roll pasta by hand with an Italian grandma, make an ancient mole recipe with a healer in Mexico City, or cook a Portuguese feast with drag queens in Lisbon.

Guests can access 3,000 unique recipes usually reserved for kith and kin in more than 75 countries.

“Ever since the very first guests travelled with Airbnb, we have realized that sharing a meal is the key that unlocks culture and fosters connection,” CEO Brian Chesky said in a statement.

Unlike normal cooking classes, which can be overwhelming and time-consuming, Airbnb wants to focus on human connection.

“We want to bring back the tradition of people coming together to make and share meals,” Chesky continued. “And through this help preserve unique recipes that are shared within family kitchens around the world.”

Hosts include Great British Bake Off judge Prue Leith, renowned Mexican chef Enrique Olvera, and Singaporean culinary icon Damian D’Silva.

Obviously not everyone is willing to distribute the recipes passed down through their family for generations.

Those who do wish to share their preferred method for making noodle kugel or mole, however, will be vetted against guidelines inspired by Slow Food, a grassroots organization aimed at preventing the disappearance of local food cultures and traditions.

“We have verified that each host … communicates the unique essence of every dish through their personal stories and has proven a deep knowledge of the heritage of the cuisine that they share,” according to the blog.

To celebrate the launch of this new Experience, Airbnb will treat the world’s 100 best home chefs to a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Italy.

The top applicants/nominees will study alongside experts like Momofuku founder David Chang (and his mom, Sherri) and learn to refine their family recipe for an Airbnb cookbook, expected in 2020.

As if workshops, tastings, field visits, and lessons from Slow Food’s University of Gastronomic Sciences professors, guests will get hands-on lessons from bonafide Italian grandmother Nonna Nerina.

Eligible users can apply themselves or nominate their favorite home cook via airbnb.com/cooking; you must submit a personal essay on why this person’s passion for cooking and their family recipe makes them “the perfect fit.”

Applications are now open, and close at 11:59 Easter on Dec. 23.

Twenty-five spots are available on each of next year’s four sessions: June 15, 22, 29, and July 6.
