There are few movie sneakers more legendary than the Air Jordan 11s Michael Jordan laces up in Space Jam. From the legendary patent leather lining to the cool blue accents, it’s a sneaker for the ages – and it sells like one. Every time Nike puts out a retro of the sneaker it’s an instant sellout, and while resale prices have gone down over the last couple of years thanks to a massive restock in 2018, a pair of the shoes will still set you back around $300.
For those of us that don’t have that kind of money to throw around, the next best thing may be coming. The latest wave of the recent resurgence of interest in Nike’s SB (skateboarding) line is a brand-new high-top Dunk that draws inspiration from Jordan’s legendary shoes he laced up against the Monstars.
The shoes were teased earlier this week by international retailer Murasaki Sports. The colorway adorns a classic Nike SB Dunk High, a silhouette that defined sneaker culture in the mid-aughts but has since cooled down (though there’s that aforementioned recent resurgence so hey, everything is new again, etc.). The shoe is built from a black stitched base on the upper and a whole lot of that classic patent leather that made the Jordan 11 such a revelatory shoe. The toe box and large portions of the upper are made of patent leather while the tongue is fabric. The heel guard is a smooth black leather, complementing the patent leather perfectly.
The coolest detail is on the heel. The shoe famously has Jordan’s best-known number of 23 in a classic text on the heel tab. The Dunk has that same heel tag and bears the letters “SB†in the same font. It’s a killer touch harkening back to the shoe’s inspirations. The whole thing is drawn together by a white lower with a blue translucent sole, perfectly complementing the blue accents that adorn the shoe.
Now, to be clear, we don’t know what kind of availability this shoe will have, so assuming that it will be affordable and accessible is perhaps wishful thinking. With Murasaki Sports being the retailer that broke the story, there’s always a chance this ends up being a regional-exclusive release that is only available overseas. Releases like that tend to come with high resale prices so maybe see if you have any friends traveling abroad to Japan this month just to be safe. The rumored release date is Nov. 27 so act fast. You can’t come on and slam without some Space Jam kicks.
