At Last, the Live-Action ‘Sonic The Hedgehog’ Trailer Is Here!

Our first look at the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie half a year ago showed us a lot of things fans didn’t want to see on the classic video game mascot, mostly his gross realistic body including nostrils and human teeth. So kudos to the team for taking the hilarious L and completely redesigning the character. Even more kudos for giving the CGI animators they time they actually needed and pushing the film back a few months instead of making them work overtime.

So because you demanded, live-action Sonic now has a brand new look that’s way closer to the games. And it’s pretty good! He’s got nice expressive eyes, pleasing cute cartoon proportions complete with gloves, and overall doesn’t look like an erotic furry nightmare gremlin anymore. A live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie was always going to be cursed. But at least the sheer demonic energy has been somewhat toned down. See for yourself!

Suffice it to say, the internet had a pretty intense reaction to this very first trailer for the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie. Specifically fans of the game (and people who just generally dislike terrifying cartoon animals with human teeth) had an issue with the character design for the blue blur himself. Following the outcry, director Jeff Fowler had now said the design will be tweaked before the movie comes out.

We just hope this doesn’t like to exploitation of the CGI visual effects artists who have already suffered enough working on a Sonic the Hedgehog movie. Fortunately, the team now has more time to get things right because the movie has been delayed to February 14, 2020. The Valentine’s Day release date makes more sense anyway because anyone watching this totally wants to date Sonic.

This is it. Sega and Paramount weren’t bluffing. The game publisher and movie studio are really following through on their threat to turn beleaguered platforming mascot Sonic the Hedgehog into the most cursed live-action video game game since Pokemon: Detective Pikachu. Seeing just glimpses of Sonic’s weird muscular CGI body is one thing. But nothing can prepare you for witnessing this film in motion.

Prepare yourselves for this “Genesis.” (Update: it now seems this original trailer has been removed in a hilarious attempt to burn this sinful version of Sonic from our collective memory.)

This is a movie where Ben Schwartz says “Gotta go fast” and meows like a house cat with his weird human teeth. This is a movie where James Marsden picks up a strand of Sonic’s hair coursing with energy and accidentally admits to kidnapping a child. This is a movie where a very 90s Jim Carrey’s Dr. Robotnik works with the “Green Hill” army to capture Sonic with an army of robots while slowly devolving into a cartoon character. This movie thought “Gangsta’s Paradise” was an appropriate song choice. This is a movie so full of demonic power that it’s even got Larry King babbling about hedgehogs.

A live-action Sonic movie is such an impossible concept to wrap my brain around that I can’t even tell if this movie looks like a horrifying failure or an unparalleled success. It might be both! And really the only way to balance the cosmic scales was to release a nightmare Sonic film after the games finally got back on track with Sonic Mania.

So make peace with your gods and get ready for Sonic the Hedgehog the motion picture running into theaters November 8.
