Facebook is vying for a place in your living room with its new line of Portal smart devices. For a limited time when you buy two or more of these devices, you can save $25 per device and ship them to multiple addresses at no extra cost.
If this is the first you’ve heard of Facebook’s Portal devices, then you should know they are designed to make video chatting with friends and family a more enjoyable experience than with your smartphone or PC. Currently Portal offers four different devices, three of which look essentially like tablets. They differ from the average tablet by featuring more robust audio equipment, which should make it easier for you and whomever you call to hear each other. In addition to containing a 4-point mic array for voice detection and audio recording, these Portal devices also come with powerful speakers and HD displays. The top-end model has a 15.6-inch display and an array of 2-inch tweeters and a 4-inch subwoofer.
The company’s fourth product is the Portal TV, which is essentially a high-tech webcam that’s designed to have a small physical footprint. Don’t judge it by its size though, as this device features an 8-point mic array that should have superior performance than the other Portal devices. The Portal TV doesn’t come with speakers or a display, but, as its name suggests, is designed to connect to a TV and use it for video and audio output.
As these devices are sold by Facebook, it should come as no surprise that they come with Facebook’s Messenger app pre-installed, which is the primary video calling service. All Portal devices also feature support for WhatsApp if you prefer to use that software instead of Facebook Messenger, and they also feature Amazon’s Alexa voice activated digital assistant.
Right now when you purchase any two of these devices you will be able to save $25 per device for a total of $50. Adding additional devices will give you an extra $25 discount per device, with no clear limit on how many devices you can add. As part of the offer Portal will also ship these devices to multiple addresses at no extra cost, making it simple and more affordable to buy one for yourself and a distant family member.
