A ship carrying a liquor shipment to the last Russian Czar never completed its journey. Now, 102 years later, the sunken vessel is finally showing off its boozy cargo to researchers.

In May 1917, the Swedish steamer S/S Kyros was sunk by a German U-boat due to its “contraband” cargo, Fox News noted. The crew was moved to a neighboring boat and safely sent back to Sweden. However, there were reportedly 50 cases of cognac and 15 cases of liquor inside the steamer when it sank, said an Ocean X Team press release.

The wreck of the S/S Kyros was discovered in 1999 and over the past 20 years, it was was cleared from nets, so divers and unmanned underwater vehicles (ROVs) could access the site.

Ocean X Team and iXplorer, in collaboration with the salvage vessel “Deepsea Worker,” recently recovered a shipload of cognac and liquor from the boat. Nine-hundred bottles of “Benedictine” liquor (now owned by Bacardi) and “De Haartman & Co” cognac were salvaged from a depth of 77 meters (about 253 feet) in international waters between Finland and Sweden, Popular Mechanics reported.

“It’s a fantastic moment to find these bottles… finally … it took 20 years to bring up this historic treasure,” Ocean X Team spokesperson Dennis Asberg told Fox News. “Many of the bottles are in good condition … but we will now do an analysis on all the bottles.”
