Remember like a decade ago when Harry Potter was the biggest thing ever? Granted, it’s still pretty huge. It’s inspiring entire new models of theme parks. But these days J.K. Rowling’s Wizard World just doesn’t feel as magical as it used to between endless retcons, unnecessary side material, and an increasingly embarrassing connection with overzealous liberals with limited metaphor imagination.
The poor Fantastic Beasts prequel series is really the perfect summation of the current diminished yet lucrative state of Harry Potter. And that’s before they though hiring Johnny Depp would get real people to say out loud, “One ticket for The Crimes of Grindelwald, please.”
But because what is a #brand may never die, Fantastic Beasts 3 is still moving forward. According to Deadline, the third entry in this five(?) movie series moves the early 20th century magical action out of Europe and into South America, specifically Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. So far Fantastic Beasts has been building toward the World War II-esque conflict between Dumbledore and Grindelwald. Maybe wizard Nazis have a habit of escaping to South America just like regular Nazis.
While the location may be new, pretty much everything else about Fantastic Beasts 3 sounds like what we expect. Eddie Redmayne, Ezra Miller, Jude Law, Alison Sudol, Dan Fogler, Katherine Waterson, and yes Johnny Depp are all back. Jessica Williams also apparently has a bigger role as an American magic professor so that’s pretty cool. David Yates still directs.
Taking a slightly longer break, Fantastic Beasts 3 doesn’t release until November 2021. In the meantime, remember when someone caught an actual house elf on video?
