Google Maps has replaced more than just road maps.
The navigation app suggests meals, predicts public transit crowds, and translates foreign place names.
It can even help plan your next adventure, thanks to Local Guides.
The program enables users to contribute to Google Maps—add reviews and photos, upload videos, correct information—in exchange for perks and benefits.
Visiting Bangalore? Melvin John’s reviews will guide you through the city’s microbrewery scene. New to Tokyo? Check out Ayaka Ohkawa’s photography as you explore local landmarks, cuisine, and culture.
Across 24,000 cities and towns, the platform boasts 120 million Local Guides, all of whom are “passionate about sharing their experiences by contributing reviews, photos, lists, and more,” Product Manager Austin Wells wrote in a blog post.
But those endorsements can easily get lost among the hubbub of Google Maps.
Which is why the company is piloting a new feature that makes it easier to get advice from Local Guides.
Folks in Bangkok (Thailand), Delhi (India), London, Mexico City, New York, Osaka (Japan), San Francisco, São Paulo (Brazil), and Tokyo—will soon see top Local Guides featured in the “For You” tab of the app.
“When you follow one of these Local Guides, their recommendations will be surfaced to you in Google Maps,” according to Wells. “So you can get inspired with ideas of things to do and places to go.”
There is no word on what criteria “top” Guides must meet.
If you live in one of the nine test cities, keep an eye on the mobile application and “you might just discover something new with help from a local,” Wells said.
