One of the year’s biggest surprises for superhero movies has been Shazam! The latest shockingly great entry in DC’s recovering cinematic universe did a pretty perfect job on delivering the enjoyable adolescent power fantasy at the heart of the premise. Little boy orphan becomes grown man superhero after saying a magic word? What’s not to love!

But although he received more characterization than you might have expected, Mark Strong’s villainous Dr. Sivana was never going to headline more than one movie. And as great as it would be to see Zachary Levi in a muscle suit fighting evil talking worm Mister Mind from the end credits, that would also be pretty tough to put on the poster. You need star power, and few stars shine brighter than Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson. And according to the Rock’s Instagram page, that’s exactly what you’re going to get when Black Adam releases in theaters December 2021.

Black Adam will now be directed by Jaume Collet-Serra who previously directed movies like Orphan, The Shallows, and upcoming Dwayne Johnson movie Jungle Cruise. Shazam director David F. Sandberg also had a horror movie background, so why mess with a proven formula?

Although Johnson didn’t appear in Shazam, Black Adam (Teth-Adam) was referenced by the wizard as the previous champion who grew arrogant and corrupted by his new godlike powers. Presumably this villain origin movie will explore that downfall thousands of years ago in Black Adam’s ancient Egypt-esque magical home country of Kahndaq. It’s the Scorpion King all over again. And this all has to end in a big fight with Billy right? Shazam vs. Black Adam already sounds better than Batman vs. Superman.
