‘Super Mario 64 Land’ Is a Fan-Made Mario Epic

After years of indie homages to classic 2D platformers, 3D platformers are finally getting their time in the nostalgia sun. Games like A Hat in Time, Yooka-Laylee, and most recently New Super Lucky’s Tale pay tribute to the era of gaming where simply being able to jump in all three dimensions as a colorful mascot was something to celebrate. And of course the grandfather of this whole genre was Super Mario 64 on the Nintendo 64.

But for Kaze Emanuar, the only way to truly honor Super Mario 64 was to develop a full-fledged fan-made sequel inside of Super Mario 64. Watch this trailer for Super Mario 64 Land.

It may not be the fabled Super Mario 128, but Super Mario 64 Land still looks pretty darn impressive. Just the sheer amount of new features Emanuar was able to wring out of this ancient game framework, as reported by Kotaku, boggles our mind.

Set to a MIDI remix of a Super Mario Galaxy tune, we see polygonal Mario exploring new areas, challenging new bosses, and using new power-ups. Finally, experience what it would’ve been like to use Mario’s cat suit or tanooki tail in 1996. There’s even a fight against Master Hand from Super Smash Bros.

Super Mario 64 Land isn’t its own game but rather a ROM hack for the original Super Mario 64. So just be aware of the legal gray area of downloading and checking this out for yourself.
