Enormous Squid ‘Watches’ Deep-Sea Vehicle in Chilling Photo

A giant squid was caught “spying on” a deep-sea vehicle and a creepy photo shows the creature in action.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) recently uploaded a photo of the chilling sight on Facebook. In the photo, the NOAA’s remotely operated Deep Discoverer (D2) is being “watched” by the massive squid deep below the surface.

“Check out this lurking deep-sea squid (Grimalditeuthis bonplandi), seen creeping above remotely operated vehicle Deep Discoverer (D2), as the vehicle explores the face of a scarp feature during Windows to the Deep 2019,” the NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research wrote on Facebook. “Ever get the feeling you’re being watched?!”

NOAA also explained how they were able to spot the sneaky creature on the ocean floor.

“Good thing D2 has Seirios standing guard,” the NOAA Office of Ocean Exploration and Research explained. “Referred to in the industry as a ‘camera sled,’ Seirios is tethered directly to the ship and then to D2, providing illumination and a wide-angle view as she hovers above D2, expanding our view of the seafloor and catching glimpses of things we’d otherwise miss…”

This isn’t the first time NOAA has spotted a gigantic squid deep underwater: Earlier this year, NOAA observed a big squid in the Gulf of Mexico and some biologists described the rare footage as “the most amazing video you’ve ever seen,” Fox News reported. NOAA spotted the colossal animal roughly 100 miles off the coast of New Orleans.
