Disney CEO Bob Iger must be feeling extra spicy these days. Not content just dishing a bunch of hot gossip about his own company in his recent book, Iger recently had some less-than-stellar things to say about Disney’s treatment of Star Wars. I guess when you’re the head of the entertainment monopoly swallowing all of Hollywood you can really speak your mind. In an interview with BBC Radio, and reported by Cinema Blend, Iger repeated his belief that Disney simply made too many Star Wars movies too quickly.
“I have said publicly that I think we made and released too many Star Wars films over a short period of time,” said Iger. “I have not said that they were disappointing in any way. I’ve not said that I’m disappointed in their performance. I just think that there’s something so special about a Star Wars film, and less is more.”
Of course Iger’s not going to straight-up trash his own massively successful movies. But we can. Outside of the truly excellent The Last Jedi, I’ve personally found Disney’s Star Wars movies to be overly safe to the point of pointless, obnoxiously insisting that simply being a Star Wars movie is a good enough reason to care to see it. Not to mention all the behind-the-scenes drama with multiple fired directors, including most recently the Game of Thrones duo Benioff and Weiss.
Star Wars isn’t going anywhere, though. Iger pivoted to saying that Disney+ shows like the upcoming The Mandalorian could keep Star Wars consistent while the movies become a somewhat more special event. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker promises to end a whole saga next month, which sounds pretty special. And the only other Star Wars movie we know about is coming from Marvel Cinematic Universe head honcho Kevin Feige, which should also be an event.
