Hideo Kojima may be most famous for being one of the most prolific video game auteurs, but the dude arguably loves movies more than anything in this world. His Twitter bio says “70% of my body is made of movies.” And his love of film should be obvious to anyone who has sat through countless bizarre Metal Gear Solid cutscenes to get back to the stealth action gameplay. His newest game, this week’s Death Stranding, even features his Hollywood friends like Mads Mikkelsen and Guillermo Del Toro in main roles.
So surprising absolutely no one, Kojima has announced that he does plan on straight-up making movies in the future.
Previously, Kojima’s cinematic ambitions might have been curtailed by his previous employer. For decades he made games for Konami, a company we now know exercises craven control over its employees. While a Metal Gear movie is still theoretically in the works (Kojima has become friendly with theoretical director Jordan Vogt-Roberts) perhaps Kojima grew frustrated watching the project languish and being unable to help.
However, now that Kojima doesn’t have to worry about Konami drama anymore, he can do whatever he wants. Death Stranding definitely sounds like a game from someone doing whatever they want. And according to Kotaku, Kojima said in a BBC Death Stranding documentary(!) that it’s practically “inevitable” that his new Kojima Productions studio will make movies and TV shows and streaming content in the future along with games.
“I think within the next three to four years, everything will move to streaming… When that happens movies, TV shows, and games will be competing in the same space.”
In the meantime, play Death Stranding on PlayStation 4 this week or wait for the PC version next summer. Also read more about the intersection of games and film (and Kojima) from the Tribeca Games Festival.
