November is always one of the busiest months in gaming and 2019 is no exception. There isn’t a single week this month that won’t have monster titles. This includes huge exclusives like PS4’s Death Stranding and Nintendo’s Pokemon Sword & Shield. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order will deliver the single-player Star Wars experience fans crave, while the PC will, at last, get a port of Red Dead Redemption II. November is not messing around so I hope your wallets and bank accounts are ready.
Death Stranding
Platform: PlayStation 4
Release date: November 8
Death Stranding is going to be the most talked-about game this month. Reviews have already shown this will be a highly divisive title. I can’t speak for those reviews, but as a long-time Hideo Kojima fan, I’m very stoked to finally play this one. I’m mostly curious to see what Kojima can do when free of a publisher’s (Konami’s) demands. Death Stranding could very well be his masterpiece. It could also be his Star Wars prequels. I’ll share my thoughts with all of you when I play the game, so stay tuned.
You can pre-order Death Stranding from Amazon.
Red Dead Redemption II
Platform: PC
Release date: November 5
A year after its console debut, Red Dead Redemption II finally comes to PC. This is effectively a prettier version of the same game that wowed us last year. Expect 4K resolution and 60 fps. Besides some new weapons, horses, and an additional quest, the biggest add-on to this port is a proper photo mode. This is hands-down my favorite game of the generation so I’m looking forward to playing it on PC.
You can pre-order Red Dead Redemption 2 from the Rockstar Games Launcher.
Pokemon Sword and Shield
Platform: Nintendo Switch
Release date: November 15
It’s always been ironic to me how Pokemon — a series about evolving cute little monsters — has itself barely evolved since its inception. If you’ve played one Pokemon game, you’ve played them all. That’s about to change with Pokemon Sword and Shield. The biggest change here is that players will (finally) get to explore a fully 3D polygonal world. That aspect alone might bring in a new crop of players. I’m not exactly a fan of the franchise but even I’m curious about this one. Expect Pokemon Sword and Shield to boost the Switch’s already impressive sales numbers when it comes out.
You can pre-order Pokemon Sword and Shield from Amazon.
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order
Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One
Release date: November 15
After Star Wars: Battlefront II, it would be understandable for folks to not want another Star Wars game. But EA has a license to maintain, hence the existence of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. This single-player experience is in some ways what we wanted from the canceled Star Wars 1313 and Amy Hennig’s Star Wars game. Players can expect intense lightsaber action, Force-focused platforming, and even some Metroidvania-ish exploration. Combat takes inspiration from Dark Souls with its reliance on blocking and countering. You can check out Jordan Minor’s hands-on preview to get a better sense of what to expect.
You can pre-order Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order from Amazon.
Shenmue III
Platforms: PC, PS4
Release date: November 19
Shenmue III is releasing after nearly two decades. The original was a revolutionary title in its day so it’ll be interesting to see how modern audiences take to this installment’s old-school mechanics. Shenmue is one of the titles that showed me how deep games can get in terms of immersing players in a living world. Though I’m happy Shenmue III is dropping, I can’t exactly say I’m excited. I now have the Yakuza series to fill the void left by Shenmue. And if I’m being completely honest, Shenmue III’s graphics and character models are pretty disappointing. Hopefully, this game will satisfy those who’ve patiently waited all these years.
You can pre-order Shenmue III from Amazon.
Need for Speed: Heat
Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One
Release date: November 8
Need for Speed: Heat sees EA’s most prolific racing franchise return after going on hiatus last year. If you’ve played previous entries then you know what to expect here. Players will get to drive across a massive open-world filled with diverse environments. The main twist this time around is that there is no day/night cycle. Instead, players can participate in different events that happen at specific times of the day. Day-time events have sanctioned races that reward winners with cash, while night-time races reward participants with reputation. Considering how there isn’t a new Forza Motorsport title this year, Need for Speed: Heat is the fall’s go-to title for racing fans.
You can pre-order Need for Speed: Heat from Amazon.
Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games: Tokyo 2020
Platform: Nintendo Switch
Release date: November 5
The Olympics are right around the corner which means it’s time for a new Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. This latest entry features many of the events found in previous titles like swimming, boxing, and gymnastics. It will also have some new events like surfing, karate, and skateboarding. This Nintendo Switch version will have a mode inspired by the 1964 Olympics. What’s fun about this mode is that it is in 2D; with Mario and Sonic appearing in their 8 and 16-bit forms (respectively). This should be a fun title for fans of the two iconic characters.
You can pre-order Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games: Tokyo 2020 from Amazon.
New Super Lucky’s Tale
Platform: Nintendo Switch
Release date: November 8
New Super Lucky’s Tale made its debut as an Xbox One exclusive in 2017. A newly enhanced version is now coming to Nintendo Switch, which seems like a more appropriate home for the whimsical game. This edition has smoother controls, a streamlined UI, new levels, cinematics, and voice-over work. Now that it is coming to Switch, perhaps the game will find its audience.
You can pre-order New Super Lucky’s Tale from Amazon.
Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition
Platform: PC
Release date: November 14
Age of Empires II: Age of Kings is a classic RTS game that fans of the genre continue to praise even 20 years after its release. Given its significance, it’s not surprising to see the classic return in the form of Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition. As expected from a remaster, this version sports 4K resolution and enhanced visuals. On top of that, players can also expect a new campaign called The Last Khans, four new civilizations, and all of the add-ons the original and HD versions contained. If you’re in the market for a dense RTS experience, Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition is worth looking into.
You can pre-order Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition from Steam.
