Harmonix’s ‘Fuser’ Brings Back ‘DropMix’s’ Musical Mashup Majesty

If sales numbers are anything to go by, most of you reading this have no idea what DropMix is. It was a physical card game/video game from Hasbro and Harmonix, the makers of legendary music games like Rock Band and the original Guitar Hero. And to me, DropMix was the apotheosis of their interactive musical genius, using software to seamlessly mash up disparate songs in real-time. It was incredible. It was one of my favorite games of the decade. It was too beautiful for this world.

Fortunately, it seems Harmonix agrees that the tech behind DropMix was too important to never use again. So they’ve blessed us once more with another potential majestic musical mashup masterpiece: Fuser.

I don’t know how else to describe Fuser other than “DropMix but without the cards.” Players take on the role of DJ blending songs together for the enjoyment of the crowd or the club. The four slots let you mix together any combination of drums, bass, melody, or vocal parts from a variety of hits. Losing the physical card aspect might take away from the cool, passive, ornamental aspect of just leaving DropMix on at a party. But Fuser being a purely digital video game certainly makes it less cumbersome (and less expensive). Besides, the controller interface seems pretty intuitive.

Music games live and die by their songs though. Fuser launches with over a hundred tracks with some real exciting choices like “Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X, “Bad Guy” by Billie Eilish, “Born This Way” by Lady Gaga, “Better Now” by Post Malone, “In Da Club” by 50 Cent, “Good as Hell” by Lizzo, and even “All Star” by Smash Mouth. So they were listening to my suggestions. Hopefully DLC is also in the cards.

Fuser makes its playable debut at PAX East this weekend and launches this fall on Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, and PC. In the meantime, check out all our DropMix coverage including live streams, our favorite mixes, and these exclusive collector cards.
