When you groggily reach over to shut off the alarm on your phone first thing in the morning, the last thing you want to see is a random notification from an app you don’t recognize. That’s exactly what happened to some Samsung users today — yours truly included.
Nestled among the other overnight notifications I’d received was one from Find My Mobile. It was pretty odd looking, with a 1 sitting above another 1. As weird as the message itself was, the real weirdness was that I had a Find My Mobile notification at all.
I definitely didn’t request one, and my only experience with ‘Find My’ services is that if you ask them to locate your device they’ll locate your devices. But I didn’t ask Samsung to do that, and neither did a whole bunch of other Samsung device owners.
Twitter was buzzing with reports from users who had received the notification, like Josh Broom:
Anyone else get that find my mobile push notification that just about gave me a heart attack?
Jesus christ Samsung

And yes, I’m with you, Josh. My first murky thought this morning was how the heck did someone get logged into my account and try to locate my phone? It’s not the most pleasant way to start your day.
Fortunately, Samsung Help UK was on the scene. They chimed in around 5AM ET to let everybody know it “was sent unintentionally during an internal test and there is no effect on your device.” That’s all fine and dandy, but what about the effect on my sleep-deprived brain?
As for how many people actually saw the “unintentional internal test” message, Samsung says that it was a “limited number.” That’s not terribly specific and could mean limited to anyone who has a Samsung Cloud account or even whose Samsung phone was turned on at the time.
