Five years after entering Early Access, and 14 years after first starting development, the ambitious Half-Life fan remake Black Mesa finally has a release date. On March 5, guide Gordon Freeman through Xen levels that are actually good. It’ll be the perfect prelude to Half-Life: Alyx on VR later that month. In the meantime, did you snag the other Half-Life games free on Steam?
The wait continues, maybe forever, for Half-Life 3 to appear, but that doesn’t mean new content set within the Half-Life universe isn’t coming. In fact, you can play that new content right now if you don’t mind an incomplete game. That’s because Black Mesa has finally launched in Early Access form on Steam for $20.
You may remember Black Mesa first saw a release back in 2012, but it was far from complete. However, work has continued and the development team has now decided to offer the latest version of what is still an in-development game to the Steam masses.
So what exactly is Black Mesa?
It’s a “re-envisioning of Valve Software’s seminal classic Half-Life” including greatly enhanced environments and more challenging and realistic gameplay. It’s a total remake. There’s over 10 hours of gameplay in the single-player campaign and both deathmatch and team deathmatch multiplayer modes promised. It uses the Source engine, but this is no port like the original Half-Life received, this is all new, pushing the engine to the limits, environments and graphics.
There’s no confirmed release date for the finished game, but Early Access allows you to play an 85%-complete single-player campaign as well as being involved with feedback and helping improve the overall experience. You’re also getting a discount as the $20 price now will increase to $25 once the game is complete.
If you’re wondering how this version differs from the free version of Black Mesa from 2012, basically that was a mod using the new engine at the time. Paying gets you a new game, the latest version including 2 further years of development, and all future work that will happen on the game, including a lot more content in the form of. Tempted?
