God, I love nostalgia.
General Mills is reviving Dunkaroos this summer. Classic Nerf Super Soakers are making their return. And Mall Madness has been given a digital upgrade.
But just when I thought my little ’90s-kid heart couldn’t take any more, Hasbro announced the return of Tiger Electronics LCD handheld games.
As reported by The Verge, the company will release four new versions of the portable plaything this fall for a bargain price of $14.99 each.
Available now to preorder at Gamestop, launch titles include “The Little Mermaid,” “Transformers: Generation 2,” “X-Men Project X,” and “Sonic the Hedgehog 3.”
The toys are “inspired” by the original LCD models, according to Hasbro, which merged with the now-defunct Tiger Electronics in 1998.
And the resemblance is uncanny.
Each unit (powered by two AA batteries—not included, obvs) features the iconic control setup, colorful background, and monochromatic graphics of my childhood.
“The design and technology were created with the original handheld game unit in mind,” Hasbro said in a statement to The Verge.
Hasbro did not immediately respond to Geek’s request for comment.
Best known for its handheld LCD games, Tiger was also responsible for the Furby, Giga Pets, and 2-XL robot—the first “smart toy.”
Thankfully, the insufferable owl-like Furby never made a comeback. But digital pets did: Bandai Namco in July released an all-color version of the Tamagotchi, appealing to Millennials who have replaced plastic pets with houseplants.
