Finally, Eli Roth Is Directing a ‘Borderlands’ Movie

People really do love Borderlands, I guess. The Gearbox joint was ahead of its time mashing up shooter and loot-driven RPG mechanics years before Destiny. And in an ocean of brown drab military affairs, the colorful sci-fi cel-shaded art style definitely stands out. Heck, Borderlands 2 was apparently so popular for so long that not even Randy Pitchford’s botched magician antics could stop Borderlands 3 from being 2019’s biggest successes. Borderlands even got a Fortnite tie-in!

All this to say that a Borderlands movie being a thing doesn’t surprise us at all. And now we know that thing will be directed by Eli Roth.

When he’s not hunting Nazis in Tarantino movies, Eli Roth is best known for horror movies like Cabin Fever and Hostel, favoring gory, torture porn-style violence. So he definitely can come up with some creative action-packed uses for Borderlands’ infinite number of randomly generated guns. However, his style has a bit more range than that if examples like vigilante thriller remake Death Wish and Goosebumps-style kids spooky adventure The House With a Clock in Its Walls are any indication.

“I’m so excited to dive into the world of Borderlands and I could not be doing it with a better script, producing team, and studio,” said Roth in a statement. That script comes from Chernobyl screenwriter Craig Mazin whereas that Lionsgate producing team includes infamous former Marvel ghoul Avi Arad. “We are out to make a new classic, one which the fans of the game will love, but also one which will find new audiences globally.”

No word on any casting, release date, or what exactly that plot will be. But we’re guessing a big name actor for Handsome Jack and perhaps some inspiration from Telltale’s Tales From The Borderlands since many regard that episodic adventure game series as the best bit of storytelling from the franchise.
