James Dean is starring in a movie 64 years after his death, and many actors, including Chris Evans and Elijah Wood, are slamming the CGI casting decision and saying it “sets an awful precedent” for future entertainment.
On Wednesday, Magic City Films announced that Dean, who died in a car crash at the age of 24, will have the secondary lead role in their new action-drama Finding Jack, The Hollywood Reporter noted. A CGI version of Dean will portray Roger, a character who is involved in the final years of the Vietnam War.
Even though directors Anton Ernst and Tati Golykh were granted permission to use Dean’s image in the film, many industry members are criticizing their actions.
I’m sure he’d be thrilled 🙄
This is awful.
Maybe we can get a computer to paint us a new Picasso. Or write a couple new John Lennon tunes.
The complete lack of understanding here is shameful. https://t.co/hkwXyTR4pu

NOPE. this shouldn’t be a thing. https://t.co/RH7jWY5cAG

Wood also expressed his disappointment over the casting news, stating that “this shouldn’t be a thing.”
Julie Ann Emery, who’s known for her work in Preacher and Better Call Saul, raised concerns over how the real actors would be compensated.
Yeah, that’s not James Dean.
It’s his face on a motion capture performance and an “anonymous” actor providing voice pattern and choices.I’d like to know how it will be credited.
How the real actors will be paid.
And how little this team understands the acting craft https://t.co/MkIQHrB5Y0— Julie Ann Emery (@julieannemery) November 6, 2019
Other public figures, including Zelda Williams, brought up the fact that the “future of performance” was at risk if the industry used technology like this.
“I have talked to friends about this for YEARS and no one ever believed me that the industry would stoop this low once tech got better,” Williams wrote on Twitter. “Publicity stunt or not, this is puppeteering the dead for their ‘clout’ alone and it sets such an awful precedent for the future of performance.”
