Elisabeth Moss Fights Unseen Abusive Ex in ‘The Invisible Man’ Trailer

Remember the Dark Universe? The only failed cinematic universe sadder than DC’s, the Dark Universe was Universal’s attempt to reunite their classic monster movie franchises into one single continuity. And then that awful Tom Cruise Mummy reboot came out, with its accidentally hilarious screaming trailer mistake, and the whole thing basically vanished.

Speaking of vanishing, Universal is still putting out monster movies. They’ll just be standalone horror tales, not bloated action epics trying to convince you Frankenstein is an Avenger. Check out this first trailer for The Invisible Man.

Originally Johnny Depp had signed on to play the Invisible Man as one of the Dark Universe’s biggest stars. And considering this reboot’s whole angle is being a metaphor for an abusive ex, they should’ve just kept that casting.

The Handmaid’s Tale’s Elisabeth Moss continues his streak as entertainment’s avatar of white woman suffering in the lead role. When her sociopath of an ex-boyfriend seemingly kills himself, Moss starts being haunted and assaulted by him from beyond the grave. Or through science? The best horror movies use monsters as metaphors for real-world terror. That’s why Black horror movies are so potent. And these days women being harmed, disbelieved, controlled, gaslit, and murdered by awful men is an unfortunately commonplace terror. The real Invisible Man is the patriarchy.

Directed by Upgrade’s Leigh Whannell, and produced by horror mega-producer Jason Blum, the trailer also promises some solid action-packed frights to go along with the thematic heft. The Invisible Man shows up in theaters next February. Hopefully it’s better than Hollow Man.
