‘Red Dead Redemption 2’ Has Rocky PC Launch

Yesterday Red Dead Redemption 2 launched on PC, bringing new content and even more beautiful visuals to Rockstar’s open-world Western game that’s definitely not boring. However, because of the range of potential hardware configurations there are on PC compared to static consoles, rocky launches are pretty common. And Red Dead Redemption 2 was no exception.

Many PC players were simply unable to launch the game. And those that could still had to lower graphics quality even on their beefiest rigs. Considering the error screens, many suspect this might be a problem with Rockstar’s new PC games launcher itself. Today’s patch did resolve some issues, but no one has found a consistent fix. If you’ve already waited a year to play Red Dead 2 on PC, why not wait just a few more weeks to see if these bugs get squashed by a big cowboy boot.

As we suspected, Rockstar announcing its own PC game store was prelude to the announcement of Red Dead Redemption 2 coming to PC. And now it’s official, last year’s open-world cowboy opus launches on a PC (and Google Stadia) near you this November.

Right now video games and TV are currently competing in the world’s dumbest arms race to see who can create the most, and most niche, new digital stores and streaming services. This week TV came out strong with Netflix paying big bucks to score Seinfeld in 2021 and The Big Bang Theory coming to HBO Max. On the games side, we went hands-on with the Apple Arcade subscription service coming in just a few days.

And now one of the biggest names in video games is here with a new PC games store that maybe feels a little small considering its pedigree. Rockstar Games has just launched its own PC launcher with quality, not quantity.

Rockstar is known for AAA open-world blockbusters that primarily release on consoles. Think Grand Theft Auto, L.A. Noire, and Bully. However, they often eventually bring their games to PC, too. Usually those end up being the superior versions with the right hardware. Play Grand Theft Auto V in 4K 60FPS and you’ll also want to keep spending infinite money on Grand Theft Auto Online.

The Rockstar Games PC launcher lets you access that library, however small, if you’re pretty sick of Steam but don’t want to mess with Epic. As a further incentive, anyone who signs up on the social club gets a free copy of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. With its massive fake California world and 90s hip-hop attitude, that capper of the PlayStation 2 trilogy is a fan-favorite.

It is odd though that Rockstar is celebrating its PC games while Red Dead Redemption 2, its most recent project, remains console-exclusive. Heck, even the first Red Dead Redemption has yet to come to PC. Maybe this new launcher is just paving the way for that to happen, but why not tell us? Tell us about Grand Theft Auto 6 while you’re at it.
