If you hadn’t guessed from the headline, when I first read this story about a mod that stuffs an NES inside of an NES, I thought of the famous “Yo Dawg” Xzibit meme. Then I realized that Pimp My Ride premiered 15 years ago. I felt so old, and also realized that’s how people who grew up with the NES must’ve felt, a console now old enough to be stuffed inside itself. And thus we came full circle.
Check out the NES Project.
Made by YouTuber Geeksmithing, and reported by Gizmodo, the NES Project chops up and combines parts of two different pieces of NES hardware to create a custom early Nintendo gaming experience. Basically, it’s a hollowed out version of the original model with the recent mini NES Classic stuffed inside.
What’s the point? Well it is cool to see how much progress gaming hardware is made by comparing the size of the two consoles. The extra space also leaves room for a pair of wireless NES controllers. But the real tangible benefit is that the NES outer casing also now sports a little projector with big rechargeable batteries. The NES “Project,” you get the pun? So everything you need to play NES games anywhere is snug inside this box. You don’t even need a TV screen.
