When Han Solo sees Maz Kanata holding Luke Skywalker’s first lightsaber in The Force Awakens, he asks her “where did you get that,” sparking the smuggler queen to reply with the infamous line that gave us the short-lived “A good question, for another time” meme. Now, it seems that that other time has finally come. No, not in the movie series itself, but rather in everyone’s favorite way to learn important lore details- a $4 tie-in comic!
Long thought lost forever in the gaseous pit of Bespin after Darth Vader “disarmed” Luke Skywalker during their climactic duel in The Empire Strikes Back, the latest issue of Marvel’s simply titled ‘Star Wars’ comic series is now dropping hints as to how the lightsaber wound up in Maz’s hands. The series takes place in between Episodes V and IV, and the most recent second issue explains that our characters apparently weren’t as clueless about the sword’s location as Han’s question would imply (Give the man a break, he was frozen solid until partway through Episode VI).
Focusing on the fallout of Luke’s duel with Vader, the issue ends with Lando Calrissian telling Luke that not only did the saber survive the fight, but that he knows where it is. Just as the newly minted rebel starts to lay out a plan to return to Cloud City and recover the weapon, Luke is then hit with a vision introducing both him and the audience to a new masked interloper who now seems to hold it.
This mysterious figure, dressed in what appears to be Jedi robes, seems to have caught Luke’s weapon as it fell, and implores Luke to “follow your destiny.” Here’s where the comic ends, but even this small amount of information is enough for fan theories to already start forming.
For example, who the heck is this? Obi-Wan’s Force ghost, or a Jedi who survived Order 66? We’ve already learned in The Rise of Skywalker that Force ghosts can catch physical objects, but this figure seems to lack their usual blue hue. Also, how does Lando know where the saber is? Does he know this figure? And perhaps most importantly, will Luke recover the lightsaber? It seems likely, or else he would probably have to go the entirety of the comic series without his signature weapon, which an admittedly deleted Episode VI scene nonetheless implies he didn’t replace until the beginning of the movie. But, if he does get his lightsaber back, how does he lose it again before Episode VI? Perhaps he chooses to give it away, knowing Rey will need it?
All these questions will have to wait for future issues, with Star Wars #3 set to hit store shelves on February 26. However, with the author of the excellent Darth Vader: Dark Lord of the Sith and new Kylo Ren comic series, Charles Soule, penning the weapon’s journey as well, we’re no doubt in for a soon to be essential addition to the Star Wars saga. Sure, I would have preferred to have my foreshadowing answered in Episode IX itself, but my thoughts on that movie are a story for another time…
