Doctor Sleep arrives in theaters this weekend and fans have been waiting for Stephen King’s verdict on the creepy movie. It turns out that the novelist “flipped” over the movie’s plot, which he said makes up for Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 adaptation of The Shining.

King and Mike Flanagan, writer-director of Doctor Sleep, recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the film, which highlights Danny Torrance’s eerie adult life. King, who is known for his harsh critiques of Kubrick’s The Shining, surprised fans when he praised Doctor Sleep.

“Mike Flanagan, I’ve enjoyed all his movies, and I’ve worked with him before on Gerald’s Game,” King told Entertainment Weekly. “So, I read the script very, very carefully and I said to myself, ‘Everything that I ever disliked about the Kubrick version of The Shining is redeemed for me here.”

Flanagan, who is a big fan of King’s work, reportedly felt nervous about Doctor Sleep. He was relieved when King gave positive feedback on the film.

“I sat with him in an empty theater and watched the movie with him. I spent the whole movie trying not to throw up, and staring at my own foot, and kind of overanalyzing every single noise he made next to me,” Flanagan said. “The film ended, and the credits came up, and he leaned over and he put his hand on my shoulder, and he said, ‘You did a beautiful job.’ And then I just died.”

King also discussed how Flanagan successfully bridged the gap between Doctor Sleep and The Shining.

“All I can say is, Mike [Flanagan] took my material, he created a terrific story, people who have seen this movie flip for it, and I flipped for it, too,” King added. “Because he managed to take my novel of Doctor Sleep, the sequel, and somehow weld it seamlessly to the Kubrick version of The Shining, the movie. So, yeah, I liked it a lot.”

Doctor Sleep, which stars Ewan McGregor as Torrance, hits theaters on Nov. 8.
