‘Prince of Persia’ Becomes VR Escape Room for Some Reason

Remember Prince of Persia? The ancient original platformer by Jordan Mechner is still fondly remembered for its pioneering use of rotoscope animation in primitive games. Meanwhile, the 2003 reimagining from Ubisoft consistently had truly excellent 3D level design connected by its time-manipulating gimmick.

They even made a movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal!

But ever since Assassin’s Creed ate the franchise’s lunch when it comes to “historical fantasy Ubisoft games about climbing walls and stabbing people” Prince of Persia basically died. The last release major release was a decade ago and even strongest rumors of a return haven’t come to fruition.

Prince of Persia isn’t really back. But if you’re super desperate to head back into the sands of time, Ubisoft is tossing you a grain with Prince of Persia: The Dagger of Time, a VR escape room.

In yet another example of video games leaking into the real world (Super Nintendo World and Atari’s gamer hotels say hello) Prince of Persia: The Dagger of Time is a real, physical location. Over 300 locations to be exact. Set in a “reimagined Fortress of Time” players work together to solve puzzles, fight enemies, wield time travel powers, and wait for someone else to figure things out while you run out the clock. Typical escape room stuff. The virtual reality elements are there to augment the experience and tie it back into its gaming roots. Ubisoft even promises some verticality, but don’t expect to climb up sheer walls.

Ubisoft already made two previous Escape Room games based on Assassin’s Creed, so this isn’t too surprising. But maybe if enough folks check this out, we can get some support for a real Prince of Persia revival.
