A snake catcher was recently called to a rifle shooting range outside of Brisbane, Australia to capture a “monster,” red-bellied black snake, which he nicknamed “Chonk” for its healthy appearance.
Bryce Lockett captured the 6-foot-long snake from a large creek system area on Wednesday, and told Reuters that the massive creature was most likely looking for mates since it was the start of mating season. Even though it’s common for male snakes to travel greater distances to find partners, Lockett said a snake this big was a rare sight.
“Every now and again they pop up,” Lockett told Reuters. “I named him ‘Chonk’ just because he was very fat and healthy.”
Lockett shared a picture of the big reptile on Facebook, where it’s received more than 1,000 likes so far.
“That’s a beautiful specimen. He has thrived and been lucky to reach that size,” one person commented. “I love reds….they are a magnificent creature.”
Another replied, “One of the biggest I’ve seen and I’ve spent time in the Outback.”
According to the Australian Museum, the red-bellied black snake has a moderate to robust build and can grow up to 6.5 feet in length. They’re typically found in most habitats, including lagoons, streams, and swamps within grasslands, forests, and woodlands in Queensland, Australia.
