The great TV upgrade cycle continues. 4K TVs have comfortably replaced regular old HD TVs as the products to get when you’re looking for a new display regardless of price. Not that long ago we told you about the very affordable TCL 55S425 4K TV, and prices should only drop from there when it comes to superior models.
So that means it’s time for 8K, baby! The LG Signature OLED88Z9PUA is a gorgeous look into the future of even higher resolution 8K televisions. It also costs $30,000.
Okay we know most of you reading this aren’t spending $30,000 on a new TV, especially when there’s no actual 8K consumer content to watch on said TV. But just humor us for a second. The LG Signature OLED88Z9PUA looks as stunning as you would expect when you have four times as many pixels as a 4K display, which still looks pretty good and futuristic. While watching Planet Earth test footage (of course) our reviewer noticed fine details like butterfly fur and leaf scratches even while sitting at a comfortable distance.
Physically setting up the TV isn’t as awkward as you might think. Between its massive 88-inch size and necessary base components, it doesn’t mount on a wall. But the design is elegant enough to look classy as is. You can also keep using HDMI cables, but to process 8K video you’ll need a special upgrade box available for free in December.
But you’ve humored us long enough. Now simply isn’t the time to buy an 8K TV, especially for this much money. There just isn’t any native 8K content to enjoy. The 4K upscaling looks nice, you can access streaming TV services with voice assistants, and there’s a lag-free gaming mode. But we’re only expecting next-gen consoles to finally deliver consistent 4K, not 8K. It’s just too soon.
