Well that was certainly dramatic. For quite some time now all of you who love continuity (and corporations) have been tearing your hair out because Sony threatened to end its lopsided deal with Disney and cut short Spider-Man’s shaky homecoming in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Well you got what you wanted. After some good old-fashioned negotiating in the press, Sony and Marvel have once again teamed up for more Spider-Man movies about living under Tony Stark’s shadow.
“I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it,” said Kevin Feige in a statement to Variety. “Spider-Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story crosses all ages and audiences around the globe.”
Feige also mentioned Spider-Man’s ability to “cross cinematic universes” so we might actually see Tom Holland show up in Sony’s dumb Spider-Man spin-offs about Morbius and Venom and most recently Madame Webb.
The next mainline Spider-Man film, once again produced by Feige and Amy Pascal, hits theaters in July 2021, so right on schedule. We wouldn’t be surprised if director Jon Watts returns as well after making a billion dollars with Far From Home. That also puts the movie right after Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in Marvel’s Phase 4.
There could’ve been worse resolutions to this Spider-Man debacle. Disney could’ve just bought Sony outright and put real people out of work to get back this fake bug boy. But as long as Spider-Man movie dreams are coming true, can we get another Raimi film while we’re at it?
