Mattel has launched a gender-inclusive doll line.
Creatable World is a customizable kit that gives kids a blank canvas to create their own characters.
Swap long hair for short or cowboy boots for platform sandals; pair a dress with jeans and a purse with a hat. The toy fashion closet is your oyster.
“Toys are a reflection of culture and as the world continues to celebrate the positive impact of inclusivity, we felt it was time to create a doll line free of labels,” Kim Culmone, senior vice president of Mattel Fashion Doll Design, said in a statement.
Working closely with experts, physicians, parents, and kids, the manufacturer created a one-of-a-kind play experience—of which I am, frankly, a bit jealous.
I was already a tomboy when I started playing with Barbies (I could brush their long, synthetic hair for hours).
Being able to dress up my dolls in overalls, sneakers, and graphic T-shirts instead of dresses, skirts, and heels may have helped me feel more comfortable in my own adolescent style.
Better late than never, though.
“Through research, we heard that kids don’t want their toys dictated by gender norms,” Culmone said. “This line allows all kids to express themselves freely, which is why it resonates so strongly with them.
“We’re hopeful Creatable World will encourage people to think more broadly about how all kids can benefit from doll play,” she added.
Choose from six different kits (and a variety of skin tones), available now via Amazon, Target, and Walmart.
Each $30 box comes with one doll, two hairstyle options, and “endless” styling possibilities.
In February, Mattel broke from white, blonde, disproportionate Barbie tradition with new Fashionista friends boasting more skin tones, facial features, hair textures, body types, and physical impairments—including a wheelchair and prosthetic leg.
