The most surprising thing about Spider-Man: Far From Home is that it wound up being Spider-Man’s final appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, thanks to the ongoing financial feud between Marvel and Sony. But the second-most surprising thing is the spoiler-tastic cameo in the end credits where J.K. Simmons reprised his iconic role as J. Jonah Jameson from the separate (and superior) original Sam Raimi continuity of Spider-Man films.
With Spider-Man movies once again caught in a tangled web, who knows if this plot thread will ever get a follow up. But if you want to keep pretending that Far From Home is a Sam Raimi Spider-Man movie, this new clip should help.
I love basically everything about the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies, and that definitely includes Oscar-winner J.K. Simmons’ perfect blustering take on the hilarious antagonistic newsman. So obviously this cameo hit me right in the early 2000s nostalgia. But beyond the casting I’m not thrilled about this interpretation of the character. For starters, where’s his hair?
But more importantly it makes the same mistake as the Spider-Man PlayStation 4 game by turning JJJ from typical old-fashioned New York blowhard boss to a full-on dangerous Alex Jones-style paranoid online maniac. There’s a big difference between a tabloid newspaper and a fringe conspiracy theory “.net” website. I don’t know, it just feels like an attempt to modernize the character in a way that misses the point.
You can watch Spider-Man: Far From Home at home starting September 17. For more on Spider-Man watch Tom Holland and Robert Downey Jr. reunite and get hyped for the awful Venom crossover Sony is now sure to produce.
