Respawn Entertainment is having itself quite a year. While the Titanfall games were always critical darlings, those giant robots were never the commercial success the former Call of Duty devs were surely hoping for. However, this year they’ve given us the smash hit battle royale game Apex Legends as well as Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, a new Star Wars game that probably won’t be illegal. As far as EA games go, this definitely helps you forget about Anthem.
But wait, there’s more! Rumors suggested that Respawn also had a virtual reality project in the works. And at Facebook’s Oculus event we finally saw what it was. But rather than taking place in the future or in a far off galaxy, it transports us through history back to World War II. Check out this debut trailer for Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond.
It’s funny, before ditching Activision for EA, the Respawn folks ditched EA for Activision, using their Medal of Honor knowledge to create Call of Duty. And now things come full circle. Instead of the modern warfare of the Medal of Honor reboot from a decade ago, Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond is just good old-fashioned Nazi-killing, sometimes set to music.
But as a VR game you’ll of course be doing things you wouldn’t normally do in a typical World War II shooter. Physically aim the gun. Catch grenades and throw them back. Whack enemy soldiers on the head with a frying pan. Do some sneaking around as an OSS agent. Beyond gimmicks like this, the team wants the game to immerse players in a world we tend to think of as just history. As such, they consulted veterans about making sure everything feels just right.
Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond comes to Oculus in 2020. For more on VR remember how majestic Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is in VR and learn about British Airways in-flight VR entertainment.
