Maybe I should start watching the Arrowverse. Plenty of people I trust, including writers for this very website, have had nothing but good things to say about DC’ goofy gang of live-action CW superhero shows. And while nothing is touching the cartoons, they certainly can’t be worse than some recent DC live-action movies. The fact that Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, and Legends of Tomorrow all have a yearly crossover event makes it all that more tempting.
This year’s Arrowverse crossover is Crisis on Infinite Earths, brazenly comparing itself to the most famous and universe-reshaping event of the DC comics universe. What better way to send off Arrow, the show that started it all. But the show that really started it all was Smallville, a live-action teen drama about teen Superman doing everything up to and including forming the Justice League and fighting Darkseid before officially putting on a costume. And now to bring things full circle, Smallville’s Tom Welling is reprising his role as Clark Kent himself in the coming crisis.
“For eight years, Arrow has stood on the shoulders of Smallville. Simply put, there would be no Arrow, and no Arrowverse, without it,” said executive Marc Guggenheim in a statement. “So when we first started talking about Crisis on Infinite Earths, our first, second and third priorities were getting Tom to reprise his iconic role as Clark Kent. To say that we’re thrilled would be a Superman-sized understatement.”
We don’t know exactly how Tom Welling’s Superman will appear or if he’ll even be Superman. Will they acknowledge the events of the Smallville sequel comics that ran after the show wrapped up ten seasons in 2011? We do know though that Welling is only one of three Supermen reigning in this special. Tyler Hoechlin returns from Supergirl and Brandon Routh, who plays The Atom on Legends of Tomorrow, references his starring role in Superman Returns by playing the aged Kingdom Come Superman.
It all sounds so wacky and weird and perfectly DC. Burt Ward, 1960s Robin, is going to be in this. Legendary Batman voice actor Kevin Conroy is going to play Batman Beyond-era old Bruce Wayne. Black Lightning and Batwoman will get in on the action. What about the Doom Patrol from DC Universe? They should put Ben Affleck in this! He has nothing to lose.
DC’s own Infinity War is coming to your TV when Crisis on Infinite Earths kicks off this December on the CW. For more on DC, here’s why we think James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad should be a Marvel parody.
