The “Storm Area 51” gathering is only a day away and towns are preparing for thousands of extraterrestrial-obsessed visitors to hit the Rachel, Nevada area on Friday.
It’s unknown how many people will show up to the Alienstock celebration, which stemmed from a joke Facebook event dubbed “Storm Area 51 They Can’t Stop All of Us.” The mock event, which racked up over one million responses on the social media platform, was initially scheduled for September 20. While government authorities and police are urging people to not go to Area 51 tomorrow, the towns of Hiko and Rachel are bracing for an influx of alien fans, the Associated Press reported.
“It’s happening. We already have people from all over the world,†Little A’Le’Inn proprietor Connie West told the Associated Press.
West, which operates a cute cafe and motel near the top-secret Area 51 facility, already has volunteers from Idaho, Oklahoma, Florida, Poland, Scotland, and Australia assisting her Alienstock festival, which is taking place on the grounds of Little A’Le’Inn from September 19 to September 21.
Matty Roberts, the man who created the viral “Storm Area 51” Facebook event, reportedly parted ways with West over safety concerns and is hosting his own Alienstock Festival in Las Vegas tonight.
Despite the possibility many people will go to Roberts’ event, residents and officials in the Area 51 vicinity are worried about the Rachel-based Alienstock festival. Some residents, including Joerg Arnu, have installed outdoor floodlights and “No Trespassing” signs on their properties.
“We are preparing for the worst. Those that know what to expect camping in the desert are going to have a good time,” Arnu explained. “Those who are looking for a big party are going to be disappointed.â€
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is also preparing for the otherworldly event: It issued two NOTAMs prohibiting all aircraft from flying above areas west and south of Rachel, Popular Mechanics noted. The NOTAMs are in effect until Monday, September 23, just in case attendees decide to extend their alien-themed festivities this weekend.
