Update 2: And just like that, the dream of combining the sheer nerd SEO power of Star Wars and Game of Thrones has come to an end. According to Deadline, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are no longer working on new Star Wars movies and instead have pivoted toward their $250 million Netflix deal. Good news for everyone? Disney just has to hope that the SEO strength of Marvel’s Kevin Feige’s Star Wars will be enough to pick up the slack.
Update: While the Star Wars saga as we know it is apparently ending this December with Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker, you won’t have to wait that much longer to see new Star Wars movies in the theater. Yet another trilogy is starting in 2022, and Disney confirmed that these films are coming from Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. Granted, that would’ve been more exciting before we saw the final season of Game of Thrones. But at least combining Game of Thrones and Star Wars keywords into one project should help all of us who care about SEO!
Star Wars. Nothing. But. Star Wars. The everlasting content machine that is Disney’s Star Wars just got a fresh pair of warm bodies thrown at it the other day when the latest Star Wars creative forces were revealed. After Game of Thrones finishes its run in 2019, showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will ditch HBO for Lucasfilm and write/produce a new series of Star Wars spin-off movies.
Naturally, takes have been flying fast and furious following the announcement. Some people are stoked because they are big fans of both properties. Some are less thrilled because of Game of Thrones’ arguable decline in quality and increase in cheap shock value and onion knights. Some are tired by the idea of more Star Wars movies created by white dudes. And some, like me, are just tired by the idea of more Star Wars movies period. Nothing undoes the good will of the magnificent Star Wars: The Last Jedi faster than a trailer for a pointless Han Solo movie.
But for the internet content economy, this pairing is a match made in audience heaven. To get a little inside baseball, one of the biggest ways websites like ours get readers to come to the site is through search engine optimization, or targeting specific keywords folks are interested in. “Streaming TV services,” “Black Friday deals,” “Nintendo Switch Virtual Console.”
Naturally, a website like Geek with an audience of mostly geeks targets things geeks are into. And when it comes to things geeks are into and actively search for, “Star Wars” and “Game of Thrones” are perhaps the most popular, with only “Marvel” possibly rivaling them. So by hiring the Game of Thrones guys to make new Star Wars movies, not only does Disney give itself some more guaranteed smash hits for the next decade, it also gives the blogosphere a totally reasonable excuse to cram two of its most reliable topics into countless stories, some of which I’m sure will actually be very good.
We don’t know when we can expect to see the Benioff/Weiss Star Wars movies. Presumably, they’ll come after or concurrently with the new Rian Johnson Star Wars movies. But it’s already the goose that’s laying the golden content. Begun, the content has, or, content is coming. Star Wars. Game of Thrones. Star Wars. Game of Thrones. Star Wars. Game of Thrones. Star Wars. Game of Thrones. Star Wars. Game of Thrones. Star Wars. Game of Thrones. Star Wars. Game of Thrones. Star Wars. Game of Thrones.
