Geek Pick: Razer Junglecat Controller Makes Your Phone a Nintendo Switch

When I first saw the Razer Junglecat I figured it was just a mobile video game controller that only happened to look exactly like a pair of Nintendo Switch Joy-Con slotted into the grip. Then I popped them out, attached them to the side of a phone, and said, “Oh, they really went all the way.”

Nintendo may have an edge when it comes to quality games, but if you want to get a Switch-esque gaming experience with your phone the new Razer Junglecat definitely provides.

The dream of playing mobile games with real controllers has been around for a while. Apple straight-up lets you use PlayStation and Xbox controllers while the Gamevice toyed with the idea of wrapping the sticks and buttons around the device itself. But the Razer Junglecat just uses the idea Nintendo has already proven successful on its tablet game console.

And it works! Whether attached to the sides of your phone or held separately in your hands, the Junglecat is a solid controller. It’s no Xbox Elite Controller or anything. It’s way too light. But compared to playing Fortnite with just a touch screen, the sticks and buttons are far superior. During my demo I played The King of Fighters All Star beat ‘em up spin-off, on a TV no less. And using the controller to wail on punks as future Smash Bros. character Terry Bogard felt perfectly fine and relatively lag-free over Bluetooth.

Even better is that with Razer’s Gamepad app you can intelligently remap touch screen functions to the controller even for games without built-in controller support, giving the already cool and flexible Junglecat added versatility. And you get 100 hours of battery off of a USB-C charge.

Unfortunately, even a great controller can’t fix things if the games themselves are bad. Mobile gaming is currently a hellscape of exploitative free-to-play scams. The premium experiences on Apple Arcade are a step in the right direction, but the Razer Junglecat is only compatible with Android. This dilemma isn’t necessarily Razer’s fault but it is worth mentioning.

Still, if you want your Android gaming experience to be the best it can be either at home or on the go, the Razer Junglecat mobile controller is practically a necessity. It’s available now for $100. We just don’t necessarily recommend making the switch to mobile games in general.
