Between their high price, poor battery, questionable recycling quality, and tendency to fall out of your ears, AirPods are among our least favorite modern Apple products. And yet these little white earbuds became a status symbol nonetheless. Apple’s first AirPods revision failed to provide many meaningful improvements. But now that it seems the tech is here to stay, Apple is offering a true upgrade with the new AirPods Pro.
I still get panicked flashbacks to the time I saw some bro lose an AirPod on a plane and freak out the entire flight trying to find it (don’t worry, he did). If you don’t want to suffer like him the AirPods Pro now feature three different sizes of swappable flexible silicone tips. The tighter seal hopefully keeps the AirPod more snug inside your ear.
You also get active noise cancellation for a more pure listening experience. The improved seal blocks out sound just on its own. But the AirPods Pro also feature an outward-facing microphone to tune out background noise even more efficiently. You can turn this off when you want to hear the world around you. Other features include a water resistance rating of IPX4, the return of Apple’s H1 chip, and 4.5 hours of listening on one Qi-certified charge (one hour with just five minutes of charge).
The AirPods Pro go on sale starting October 30 for the, ahem, very professional price of $250. Better pray these really don’t fall out this time! In the meantime, here are some other wireless earbuds cheaper (and arguably better) than the original AirPods.
