Carlsberg Wants to Put Beer in Paper Bottles

Carlsberg’s signature Danish pilsner hasn’t changed in over 100 years and neither has the logo on its bottles and cans. The bottles and cans themselves, however, have seen frequent tweaks.

Lately, a lot of the company’s updates reflect their commitment to sustainability. Right now Carlsberg is experimenting with putting beer in “paper bottles.” They put those words in quotes because officially the bottles are made from sustainably-sourced wood fiber.

Currently Carlsberg is comparing two prototypes. One is lined with conventional PET. The other is lined with PEF (polyethylene furanoate), a bio-plastic that’s typically made from agricultural or forestry waste. Both bottles are 100% recyclable.

The bottles are being produced by a new company called Paboco (see what they did there?). These prototypes are the result of four years of cooperation by the Technical University of Denmark, EcoXPac, and Swedish pulp and paper product manufacturer BillerudKorsnäs.

They received backing from several heavy hitters. In addition to Carlsberg, Coca-Cola, Absolut, and L’Oreal have thrown their weight behind Paboco’s sustainable bottle designs. Interim Paboco CEO Gittan Schiöld says that the partners “are united in our vision that the paper bottle will become a reality and fundamentally change this industry for good.”

These new bottles could play an important role in helping Carlsberg meet their Together Towards ZERO goals. The company has committed to achieving zero emissions at all of its breweries and a 30% reduction across all operations in the next decade.

That’s no mean feat when you’re a company that employs more than 40,000 people and brews 500-plus beers across three continents.

It will take more than wood fiber bottles to get there, but this is just Carlsberg’s latest move. They’ve also cooked up a way to cut down on plastic use by replacing the plastic snap rings that hold six-packs together with glue.
